Does the Army need Korean SPLs?
Hat has given you the best answer. Although there are KATUSAs, they are not used for everything that calls for Korean to English translation. The KATUSAs are not a part of the US Army, but augmentees. Therefore, they DO NOT do a large portion of th MI work that calls for Korean linguists as they do not have the clearance for many things. There is much US only operations that KATUSA are not allowed to do. Additionally, there are other places Korean linguist are needed by ALL branches of the military; not just the Army. It is still one of the top five and has not fallen by the wayside as someone here has suggested. BTW, they are always training most languages at DLI for two reasons. People are always getting out as some point on their career and need to be replaced from time to time. If they didn't train new folks all the time, there would be a shortage of those folks real soon. Second, just because there are a lot of people out there that speak some of the more common languages like German and French, doesn't mean they can get a clearance. Without a clearance, in many cases they are useless to the military.
