Vegan advice, ethical consideration, urgent!?

I'm doing linguistic fieldwork in Malawi, and colleagues tell me the chief of an indigenous tribe I'm working with offers visitors a chicken dish. They tell me it is seen as extremely insulting to not accept and eat their prepared meal as they don't understand why one wouldn't and I could face immediate rejection. Should I eat it?
