Linguistic term for this?

This has been bugging me for ages as I heard it in school and can't remember. (It's not a diphthong or long vowel sound, or alliteration) - but there is a term when you have a sound that is prolonged - usually with a slight almost unnoticable pause - i.e, the lengthened sound of the 'm' in Adam Mitchell?
