Jobs in Cultural Resource Management?
I am about to start my first year within the honours anthropology program at my university in the physical anthropology stream. I have finished all the first year general education requirements. I now just have to satisfy some basic sociocultural breadth requirements and one linguistic anthropology requirement. Other than that, the rest of my courses will be geared towards archaeology. For example, next year the core physical anthro courses I will be required to take will be Principles of Archaeology, Biological Anthropology, Arctic Archaeology or Archaeology of North America, + another archaeology course. 'Tis quite exciting. I have been thinking about the possibility of getting into CRM after graduating to spend a few years working as a "shovel bum", but I can't find much information about this online! I certainly wouldn't want to spend my whole life being a field technician but I think it would be an exciting job to spend the rest of my 20s doing. For years now I've been a student, and student life isn't very exciting contrary to popular belief (I wish university was like how it is portrayed in Animal House!). I have read a bit about the adventurous life of the shovel bum, traveling around from site to site, getting to work with interesting historical and archaeological artifacts, etc etc. I'm just worried that the pay is less than desirable and that it isn't exactly the best job for someone who holds an honours BA from a top-tier university and has student loans to pay off. But, that is why I am appealing to the Yahoo community to lend some advice and give some pointers! Thanks!
